Shortly after the foundation of the Federal Republic of Germany, a decree of the Federal Parliament (Bundestag) set up the Office of the Federal Prosecutor in 1950. The Office of the Federal Prosecutor is the only national prosecutor’s office, with prosecution in Germany otherwise organised at state level. Until the Office of the Federal Prosecutor moved into its current residence in 1998, it shared a building in Karlsruhe with the Federal Court of Justice. Its new home was built on the site of the former “Deutsche Waffen- und Munitionsfabrik,” [German arms and munitions factory], now the Zentrum für Kunst- und Medientechnologie (ZKM) [Centre for Art and Media Technology]. The building was designed by the internationally renowned architect Prof. Oswald Mathias Ungers. The new construction provides various examples of the concept of “art in architecture”. A particular highlight is the frieze by Dr Hans-Peter Reuter in the Siegfried Buback hall, whose blue cubes reflect the precise creative drive of the architect and artist.

As well as its premises in Karlsruhe, the Office of the Federal Prosecutor also has further premises in Leipzig, housing two of its six appellate departments. The proceedings of the 5th and 6th criminal divisions of the Federal Court of Justice, which are also based in Leipzig, are processed here.
